Cori Orian & Skittle
While working as an elementary school counselor, I had the tremendous opportunity to be able to bring my R.E.A.D. dog Skittle to school with me a couple of days each week.
Skittle and I worked with many students and were able to bring R.E.A.D. to the entire first grade class!
The students’ eyes glowed with excitement when they found out that they would be able to read to Skittle. When it was their turn to read, they gathered up books they thought Skittle would enjoy and hurried to my office. I created a cozy spot on the floor of my office for students to cuddle up to Skittle and share with her their favorite stories. When the student was finished reading, they were each given a sticker I created with Skittle's picture on it.
One of the classes was so excited about getting to read with Skittle, when a local song writer came to the school to write a song with the first graders, they chose to write their song all about Skittle. It was a great experience, not only for the students but for Skittle and I, as well. Not many dogs can say that they have their own song!
